The above statement isn't a fact, but is what I think is happening here. A friend of mine told me a while back that from his many years of talking with atheists and religious people he saw there was one big difference between them. Almost all of the religious people had addictive personalities, while atheists do not.
I am currently debating this christian women on a forum and another person tells me about how she went from an atheist to a believer. She said she was very much into drugs, and in an abusive relationship, and then a friend of hers wanted to help, so she took her to church. The women on the forum claims that the "holy spirit" went into her and saved her, and after that experience, she got off drugs, left her abusive boyfriend, and cleaned her life up.
This story is so similar to so many and why is that? I think there is a link between addictive personalities and religious belief, at least with some percentage of people. I think these people drop one addiction for the other. This pattern can be seen in other things as well. I saw a magazine article about a women who used to overeat, and food was their addiction. So in order to lose weight, she went and got the bypass surgery. After that, when she could no longer eat as much, the article told how she was in debt thousands of dollars because she dropped the food addiction, for a shopping addiction.
Even a friend of mine who is a christian I've seen pictures of her where she has a beer in her hand, and may even be out having sex with a lot of guys, though I'm not sure about that second one. She has been known to lie to me. While, me an atheist (a supposed immoral person), has never once smoked a cigarette, drank alcohol (though I have have a few sips each of some wine and champagne, though I thought they were disgusting), or taken any sort of drug in my life. While, I know people who are religious, or at least have a belief in god and who do, or used to do, these things.
Coincidence? Maybe not....
