Commentary on the Richard Carrier vs. David Marshall Debate


Earlier this year Christian apologist David Marshall debated Richard Carrier over the question, "Is the Christian Faith Reasonable?" After watching the debate I and most other commentators thought that it was about as decisive of a win as Carrier could have gotten, and Marshall has been continuously ridiculed about this debate ever since. For quite some time I considered the idea of giving a blow by blow account of why Marshall's arguments failed in the debate, having refuted the entirety of one of his books as well as a few other essays and blog posts, but eventually I scrapped the idea.



I recently came across a blog post by the infamous J.R. Fraser, David Marshall's sidekick on the Amazon.com forums, who was one of the most vile and dishonest individuals I've ever come across while debating on online fora. In a post dating from March 26, 2013, titled David Marshall v. Richard Carrier debate Fraser does his best (and that's not saying much) to defend Carrier's scathing arguments and rebuttal's to Marshall's arguments during the debate. The only argument covered in this post is Carrier's initial opening statement dealing with the Problem of Evil. You may want to watch the above video before reading on.

What follows will be the entirety of Fraser's post in blockquotes with my responses following immediately after.

Richard Carrier offers an argument against the reasonableness of the Christian faith based on a form of the problem of evil. Carrier argues that Jesus failed to inform people about things like germs, parasites, and proper sanitation and thus it is not reasonable to believe that Jesus is God as Christianity claims. The basic form of the argument can be summarized this way: “if Jesus had been God, he would have done X, Y, and Z; Jesus did not do X, Y, and Z; therefore Jesus was not God.” The fatal flaw in this argument is in justifying the first premise, but that issue can be set aside for the moment. Let’s start by looking at Carrier’s specific examples of what Jesus “should have done.”

Carrier argues that in order to prevent centuries of unnecessary deaths, Jesus should have taught people about germ theory, parasites, and proper sanitation. First, there is a considerable amount of naivety in such a statement. Even modern missionaries who travel to tribal cultures in today’s world can require years to communicate basic concepts of modern medicine to people from non-Western cultures, and that's only after said missionaries have had extensive training in cultural anthropology. While it’s easy to assume that things like modern medicine and science are culturally neutral and value-free, anthropologists know that this is not the case. So the idea that Jesus should have given lectures on germ theory strikes me as misguided. It would not have been understood. On the other hand it might have been a great strategy for him if he wanted to be followed and remembered by nobody.

I must object to Fraser's argument here, since it doesn't even begin to answer the argument Carrier was making. Fraser argues that Jesus could not have given his disciples and other peoples the necessary information about sanitation because it can take “years to communicate basic concepts of modern medicine to people from non-Western cultures, and that's only after said missionaries have had extensive training in cultural anthropology. While it’s easy to assume that things like modern medicine and science are culturally neutral and value-free, anthropologists know that this is not the case. So the idea that Jesus should have given lectures on germ theory strikes me as misguided.”

What's so horribly wrong-headed about this argument? It is the fact that if Jesus is supposed to be god then Jesus should have all of the knowledge god has, which is about everything. Therefore, it stands to reason that, armed with this knowledge, it would have been a simple thing for Jesus to inform others about the benefits of doing something as simple as washing one's hands after certain activities, or simple methods of sanitation. This argument does not at all require any “modern” knowledge since god is supposed to know everything, after all. If god is supposed to be omniscient, gracious and all loving, then certainly such a god would happily provide his creations with this necessary information. God allegedly gave his creations laws and codes of conduct, why not information to help them avoid disease by something as simple as sanitation? Or even simpler, as Carrier opines, simply eliminating said germs and parasites.

Fraser might argue that this argument is illogical because Carrier and I don't really know what god would do. However, this cuts both ways, since Fraser cannot say with any certainty what his god might do. I do think Carrier's argument is more powerful because Christians supposedly know what kind of being god and Jesus are. I just cited a few of the attributes, and given these few alone, there is no reason why a loving god who knows everything would not want to share his knowledge with his creations.

Finally, I will nitpick something he said. Fraser wrote, “Carrier argues that Jesus failed to inform people about things like germs, parasites, and proper sanitation and thus it is not reasonable to believe that Jesus is God as Christianity claims.” [emphasis mine] Carrier never said this, nor even implied it. Quoting from Carrier's opening speech, this was Carrier's argument summed up: “Notably, nowhere in the New Testament does Jesus or god impart any correct knowledge or information about the world, that wasn't already known to men at the time. Thus apparently, Jesus and his god were as ignorant as every other first century human.” Later he says, “Jesus and his god didn't do anything god-like. Just as their knowledge was ignorantly human, so was their ability.” This argument is one of his justifications for his larger point: “The Christian religion is simply not believable in the face of this evidence. Neither Jesus or Christianity as a whole has exhibited any special source of information about the world. Nothing distinctive of actual divine communication. They didn't know about germs, they didn't know about parasites. Christians have no more evidence of having a pipeline to a kind and all-knowing god than any other religion in history has, and that's the principle point, here. The fact that it took Christians 1800 years -- do the math on that, 1800 years -- to figure out that germs and parasites even existed, and it might be a good idea to kill them before they kill our kids -- proves that Christianity is a man-made religion, and not something received from any real god.”

But even supposing that this knowledge could have been accepted and understood by those first century Jews (which is simply not realistic), so what? Would these apostles of good hygiene have then been responsible to take that message to the Romans, and would the Romans have been expected to adopt it themselves? Perhaps in Carrier’s mind, if God had wanted to come to earth as a human being he would have done so as something other than an ancient Jew. Perhaps God should have made himself into a time-travelling 21st-century Westerner, because that’s what Richard Carrier would do. This appears to be the honest force of Carrier’s words.

Fraser provides no reasons why Carrier's scenario is “not realistic.” He has not provided any reasons why, given the attributes I cited, a loving god would not want to provide the knowledge to save countless thousands from death. Fraser's digression, asking whether or not Jesus' disciples would have taught the Romans, completely misses the point. And it seems obvious that Fraser is still unable to grasp the argument Carrier was making. There would be no need of time travel since god is all knowing. He already has the knowledge. Therefore, Fraser's argument is pointless.

Thus the premise that if Jesus had been God that he should have done X, Y, and Z has the dubious foundation that it simply starts from Carrier’s own assumptions about what God should do – and of course one of those assumptions is that teaching about things like repentance, sin, faith, reconciliation to God, and life after death don’t matter because – well, presumably because Carrier doesn’t think those things are real or rational. If Carrier DID think those things were real, he would probably have a correspondingly higher view of how important they are – and perhaps a different evaluation with regard to whether or not Jesus did what he should have done. If Jesus’ mission was to prevent as many premature deaths as possible, then perhaps Carrier is right, and Jesus should have taught about germs (even given the likelihood that such a teaching could never have been effective in the cultural context). If, however, his mission was something else (such as inaugurating the kingdom of God), then it’s possible that Carrier is totally off base. Rather than being a strong argument against the reasonableness of Christianity, Carrier’s argument turns out to be simple question-begging.

Richard Carrier did not state explicitly the attributes of god to give his argument its foundation, which I believe is justifiably implied, since I think Carrier's argument is just another derivation of the argument of evil, which takes into account god's allegedly loving nature. Given this foundation, this argument is anything but “question-begging.” Due to Fraser's lack of reasonable criteria or reasoning why he doesn't believe god would provide such information, I think he could be accused of question-begging.

Fraser's argument is irrational and goes against the very attributes his god is supposed to have: omniscient, gracious and all loving, among others. So, according to Fraser, his god and Jesus would rather preach their beliefs and try to convert people, rather than save childrens' lives.

There are other problems with Carrier’s argumentation which are more nitpicky. Carrier alleges that Jesus said “nothing we put into us can harm us,” and implies that this is simply wrong because of course germs can make us sick. My best guess is that Carrier is doing a botch paraphrase of Mark 7:15-23 or the parallel passage in Matthew 15:11-20. However, Jesus does not say that nothing we put into us can harm us, he says that no food can make anyone “unclean,” meaning in the Old Testament ceremonial sense.

This is a bit of a surprising gaffe by Carrier – any lay person who has attentively read the Old Testament will have noticed that there are a lot of foods which are “clean” and others which are “unclean” for the Jews. This is known as kosher. Jesus was certainly not saying that nothing we eat can harm us, he was saying that food does not defile a person spiritually. This is a significant theological point but it has nothing to do with what Carrier seems to think it does, namely physical health.

Carrier also says that according to Jesus not even poison can hurt us (although the verse actually only applies to believers), but this verse is found in the long ending of Mark which almost all scholars agree is not authentic. Carrier should know that full well.

I will deal with Fraser's first two paragraphs. Had Fraser more closely listened to Carrier's opening statement he would have known that Carrier specifically mentioned how Jesus is claimed to have said in the Gospel of Mark that “nothing we put into us can harm us.” He then cites the passage in Mark 16:18 where Jesus tells his disciples that “they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all.”

Fraser is simply being disingenuous because it's obvious that Carrier is discussing sanitation, but Fraser argues that the passages are not referring to this specifically. I'm sure Carrier is well aware of this. However, his point is that many others during the time washed their cups and other utensils (Mark 7:4), but Jesus tells his disciples not to do this. Yes, it was for religious reasons, but if Jesus is god and god is all knowing, then surely stopping the spread of disease is more important than mere religious ritual. If not, that is just immoral. That is Carrier's point.

Finally, so what if the endings in Mark are known to be unauthentic? Unauthentic or not, it was basic Jewish practice not to wash their hands and utensils, but had Jesus or god told their followers that this can lead do disease, he would have saved many lives. Even if the passage was added much later it would still not change these facts. These rituals existed despite this passage.

Carrier charges Jesus with incorrectly teaching people to eat without washing their hands in spite of the unhygienic nature of such advice. Clearly, argues Carrier, Jesus could not have been God and have made such a statement. Again Carrier’s argument flops because of his evident lack of understanding of rabbinic Judaism. The neglect of hand washing which the Jews who charged Jesus with(actually the charge was against Jesus’ disciples) was not simple hand washing for hygiene. It was the ritual hand washing that they believed good Jews were supposed to practice before, during, and after meals. Without the ritual hand washing, they believed the disciples were ceremonially unclean.

I've already anticipated and responded to this disingenuous argument. I wrote: Carrier's point is that many others during the time washed their cups and other utensils (Mark 7:4), but Jesus tells his disciples not to do this. Yes, it was for religious reasons, not hygienic, but if Jesus is god and god is all knowing, then surely Jesus and god are well aware of how to stop the spread of disease. When they saw their disciples not washing their hands, surely this thought must have crossed their minds, but they said nothing. It appears that mere religious ritual is more important than saving countless lives. If so, that is just immoral.

A bit of background is necessary here. The rabbinic system of ritual hand washing is not found in the Torah, but was later developed by the Jews. Thus Jesus responds to the challenge by challenging them: why do they break the commands of God because of traditions made by men? Jesus’ response to the question of hand washing was that food doesn’t defile a person spiritually, rather it is evil desires which motivate evil actions which defile a person. The entire discussion of hand washing (which is found in only one passage in Mark and Matthew) has to do with ceremonial cleanness and the theological discussion about the status of the Torah, a discussion which continued into the early church. Again, it’s an important theological point, but it has nothing to do with the use that Carrier wants to make of it. The idea of washing your hands for simple hygiene is not even in view. Carrier is misreading a theological discussion as a medical one.

I've already responded to this above.

Carrier’s entire argument also fails in principle. The argument is based on the premise that if a good human being would do X if it was in his or her power, then God should also do X. However, unlike human beings, God sees “the end from the beginning.” He is not so limited in his perspective as to see only the immediate effects of some action or inaction. We can make an analogy from parenthood. Very often as a parent I have to make a decision, sometimes painfully, to not do what my children would like me to do or to make them do what they do not want to do. Because I fail to do what they would do if they were in my position, from their perspective it would appear that I have fallen short of their moral standard. Often when this happens they announce, “No fair!” However, as a (hopefully) wise parent, I am able to make judgments about what is best which they are not yet able to make.

This argument is just plain ridiculous. Fraser actually argues that “God sees 'the end from the beginning'. He is not so limited in his perspective as to see only the immediate effects of some action or inaction.” In fact, it is precisely because god is able to see so far into the future that he would have known about the lives Jesus could have saved had he or Jesus mentioned these facts about the germ theory of disease and simple concepts of sanitation. Essentially, Fraser has utilized an entirely immoral argument, because he's just admitted that god and Jesus condemned millions to death and that this was the most “wise” decision. I beg to differ, and I think anyone with a properly working moral compass can also clearly see this.

The analogy to God is imperfect, because God’s wisdom is not merely significantly different in degree from ours in the way that mine is from that of my children. My children will grow up and in a few short years reach the level of understanding of an adult and perhaps one day become parents themselves. God’s wisdom, however, will always be above us, so it is not certain that anyone knows what God should do in any given situation. It’s even conceivable that they might be way off, possibly coming to a conclusion which is the opposite of the truth as God sees it.

Thus the basic form of the argument as it stands is not effective for the simple reason that it begins with the very dubious premise that Richard Carrier knows exactly what Jesus should have done if he had been divine. It’s a variation on any number of skeptical arguments from evil – if there is a God, he should have done X, or he should have prevented Y from happening. The basic justification for the premise is that any good human being would have done X or prevented Y if it was in his or her power, so God should do the same, most often accompanied by an emotional appeal which Carrier also makes heavy use of. It seems to me that it is rather more likely that if God exists (which I am convinced that he does), that he would do things which nobody would expect. A God who only did what humans expected or thought he should do would be no god at all.

Once again, had god or Jesus known of these scientific advances they could have prevented millions of deaths. I'm playing devil's advocate here, but surely Jesus and god are well aware that murder is a sin, according to god's own laws? The sixth commandment is “Thou shalt not kill,” but through their inaction they have violated their own laws. Given this fact, clearly both god and Jesus are aware that killing is wrong (it's right there in the ten commandments!) and surely all sane human beings are aware that killing is wrong, so we can easily surmise that god and Jesus would not want to willingly put innocent people to death. Given these facts, Fraser's argument that we cannot know what god or Jesus would have done is not supported by the facts, so long as they adhered to their own principles and laws that they laid down.

Obviously, they did not follow their own commandments and this is easily seen throughout the bible in both the cases of god and even Jesus. This leaves only three possibilities: either the Christian god and Jesus are immoral, or they did not and do not exist. The final option would be – and this was Carrier's entire point – that this is strong evidence that Jesus and all other persons from that time period had only the knowledge from that time period, and had no connection to any divine source of information, and further casting doubt upon other supernatural claims of Christianity. Therefore, the Christian faith is unreasonable because it is incoherent and doesn't even follow from its own premises.

Like every argument I've seen from J.R. Fraser, this post was all too easy to refute. He failed to state any logical premises from which he drew his conclusions, and he seemed to misunderstand some of Carrier's arguments. Fraser might fancy himself as some knowledgeable Christian apologist, but the fact of the matter is that his arguments are just as factually flawed and irrational as every other Christian apologist out there.

Drone War Debates: Two Atheists Lock Horns


In May of 2013 I responded to a Skeptic Ink blogger named No Cross No Crescent about his blatant use of government propaganda in his support for the drone wars and for the murder of Anwar al-Awlaki. In the comments he replied to my first post, (this post can also be viewed locally) but his counter-arguments were not much better than his original ones. What follows is the discussion with NCNC about the drone wars.

Arizona Atheist: Hi NCNC,

Thanks for responding. I would agree that a part of some of the reasons are religious in nature. For example, Bin laden has said that he wants the troops out of Muslim lands because they're sacred. However, he has also said that the murder of civilians and the destruction caused by the invading U.S. forces is another large concern. Check out Wikipedia, which even confirms these facts (not that Wikipedia is always right, but I checked their facts and in this case they are). Bin laden cited U.S. sanctions against Iraq (which killed half a million people, I believe), the U.S. support for Israel, and the presence of the U.S. military in Muslim lands.

The facts don't justify the “it's only religion” argument at all. And you cannot ignore the many recent attacks, such as the one in Boston, that was due to the murder of innocents in Muslim lands. None of the terrorists' reasons I cited in my post above gave any religious motivations.

With all of this evidence proving, undeniably, that it's not only about religion I'm truly puzzled by your position.

No Cross No Crescent: Bin Laden would say anything. His goal was to set up a caliphate in all Islamic lands, including those no longer Muslim. According to El Pais, an attack in Spain was planned before 9/11 which could not be carried out. Why? Because many centuries ago Spain (back then, and still in the language of Islamists, al-Andalus) was an Islamic land, subsequently overrun by Christians. And violence against Muslims is used to recruit for causes that have actually nothing to do with the mentioned violence. Plenty of terrorist propaganda prior to 9/11 was based on what happened to Muslims in the Balkans. Even though it was the US that finally STOPPED the genocides in Bosnia and Kosovo! So why use that against the US? Just to confuse the issue and help recruit. They see the US as the biggest power among infidels, which needs to be broken by all means possible. (That was the idea that I used to hear day and night.) As for US support for Israel-Islamists blame "infidels" for "usurping Muslim land" as long as Israel exists, no matter what. And the attack in Boston, if anything, shows the religious motivation-the perpetrators were from Chechnya, and whatever atrocities are committed there are not at the hands of the US? Again, because infidels are to blame and the US symbolizes infidels to them.

Arizona Atheist: Thanks for the response. Once again, you're ignoring what's right in front of you. Namely, the stated reasons for a handful of the attacks. But you deny it had anything to do with acts of U.S. aggression and argue that “they'll say anything” to inflame hatred against the U.S. Ok... Answer me this then. Obviously their beliefs are highly sacred to them, so one would think that the best way to gather support for their war against the west would be to try to appeal to their religious beliefs and not bother with anything else. But we don't see this. Many, if not most, of the terrorist attacks have been perpetuated by people who have true grievances against the U.S. government.

As to your argument that the U.S. stopped the fighting in Bosnia, I don't see what this has to do with the fact that, as I argued, one of the reasons Bin Laden was hostile to the U.S. and wanted retaliation was over the U.S. sanctions in Iraq over a period of five years that caused deaths of half a million children. This was not mere propaganda. All this really happened. Even The Guardian mentioned this fact in 2000. This was about a year before 9/11... and it had nothing to do with it??? I find that hard to believe.

No Cross No Crescent: It is kind of hard to gauge who the people with a "real grudge" against the US would be. Mohammad Atta, for example, was Egyptian. You may say the US supported dictator Mubarak of Egypt. But what about plenty of other dictators the US supported? Franco, Pinochet, Marcus...why didn't any suicide bombers come from their countries? The majority of the 9/11 attackers were Saudis, and the main grievance of the Saudis would the presence of "infidels" in the Islamic holy land-again, a grievance of religious nature.

As for Al Qaeda using the plight of Iraqis to recruit, it has to be said, Al Qaeda has been extremely cynical in exploiting all kinds of situations to recruit. For Al Qaeda to "sympathize" with ordinary Iraqis was the height of hypocrisy. The majority of population in Iraq are Shiites, and Al Qaeda has been murdering them in their thousands for many years now. While the suffering caused by sanctions would not discriminate, numerically most victims would be Shiite. So why would Al Qaeda turn to mass murder the same people it was sympathizing with one day? Easy. Back then it was a tool for recruitment, helping the cause of bringing about a caliphate. Now, the Shiites (considered heretics by fundamentalist Al Qaeda Sunnis) are the main obstacle to a Taliban style "Islamic Emirate" so they have to be killed. It all makes sense if you remember extremist religious ideology is their true motivation.

No Cross No Crescent: Still have a hard time explaining why nationals of countries not directly affected by violence from the US (the Tsarnaevs or Saudis involved in 9/11) would do what they did. Except, of course, vengeance for their brothers in Islam or wanting infidels away from Islamic holy sites...

Well, you've provided no evidence that these calls against injustice are just smokescreens to convince people to join their cause. It's purely circumstantial. I could just as easily argue the opposite. If what you say is true, why would captured and interrogated terrorists tell the authorities they attacked such and such target over the drone deaths? Or why would they say the same thing to a judge during their trials? They're not speaking to other Muslims, they're telling Americans that, but aren't the ones they're supposed to be propagandizing to are other Muslims in the Middle East? There's no logical reason to tell their interrogators false motivations. It's not the interrogators or judges they're trying to convince.

I want to reiterate that I agree with you that religion does play its role here, but that's not the whole story by a long shot. I think the evidence fits this conclusion best. It's not just political reasons, and it's not just religious reasons, but a combination of the two.

Finally, many people do join al Qaeda groups willingly and without being recruited once a loved one is killed. It's the acts of their loved ones being killed that drive them to seek out groups that will help them to get revenge. Propaganda has nothing to do with it. Do you not believe Muslims are capable of feeling deep loss and dispair and seek revenge when their loved ones are killed? As a matter of fact, many have testified that their reasoning was exactly that. They do not share the same ideological beliefs as the Taliban or al Qaeda, but they seek them out because they believe that group will help them get revenge. I believe that's strong evidence for my view that it's not just about religion, but revenge also.

No Cross No Crescent: Al Qaeada doesn't give a hoot about human suffering or life, be it Muslims or otherwise. Look at this, for example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_United_States_embassy_bombings They were trying to teach the "infidels" a lesson, so they bombed US embassies. As a result "only" a dozen Americans died, along with hundreds of Africans, no doubt many Muslims. Did Al Qaeda ever regret that? Not a chance. As another example, the US has now left Iraq, but Al Qaeda obviously hasn't stopped its actions there. How many Muslims does Al Qaeda have to kill before we conclude it doesn't care about Muslims' lives, and only about setting up a rigid Islamic state?

Now of course this doesn't mean those who join such groups don't have legitimate grievances. But against whom? Tsarnaevs' couldn't have any grievances against US, and foreign fighters in Syria today fighting along Al-Nusra have no direct grievances against the Al-Asad regime. Al Qaeda is very good at lumping all "infidels" (loosely meaning anyone it doesn't like) together and play the grieved to become pawns in a game they really have no stakes in.

Arizona Atheist: It just dawned on me that we're both not necessarily talking about the same groups. You seem to be focused entirely on al Qaeda, while I'm referring to them and other people who are not necessarily committed to their ideological goals, who just want to join out of sheer revenge. Those people whom I cited are not all al Qaeda, but were committing acts of violence anyway. Either way, these are individuals who often cite drone strikes as a reason for their attacks, even al Qaeda on occasion.

The U.S. hasn't left Iraq. There is still a huge embassy there, along with thousands of American State Dept. employees and private contractors.

As far as your “evidence” about al Qaeda not caring, they use these tactics all the time, who often kill innocents. So? Their main target was the American embassy, and the civilians were an accident.

Ironically even this source cites their motivation being the “invasion of Somalia” and for “revenge for American involvement in the extradition, and alleged torture, of four members of Egyptian Islamic Jihad.” Where is their religious motivations here? As I've said over and over, it's not just religion. There are too many examples to cite... I don't understand why you can't see that it's not just religious reasons for the attacks, but political, for revenge of those Americans have killed, and for ideological reasons. The evidence is all around you, even in your own sources.

Regarding Tsarnaev, you're once again ignoring what's right in front of you. He stated his reasons clearly. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the people killed because of those invasions. He said that these American deaths were “collateral damage” in retaliation for the Muslims killed in the Middle East.

No Cross No Crescent: My point was that they didn't care about hundreds of Muslims lives then, and neither do they now. So why should we give their claim that they care about Muslim suffering seriously? Looks at their targets. Thousand of Shiites have been killed by militant Sunnis in Pakistan over the last few years. What on earth does this have to do with US policy?

US troops have left Iraq. (Embassy? Well there are US embassies everywhere, people don't use them as motives for attacks.) But this clearly hasn't improved the violence along religious lines in that country. Like this attack. Why is the US to blame for this?

So why is it that Russians ever left "collateral damages" on the streets of Boston over Vietnam? Like I said I am not denying that political motives exist. Apparently, the link between Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and U.S. policy is the fact that there are groups in Chechnya who have close ties with al Qaeda and, like al Qaeda elsewhere, are angry about the U.S. policies and the wars.

So, let's see where we're at here at this point. Thus far, you've been unable to prove your case that many of these attacks are purely religiously motivated, even after being asked several times. Two, you oddly continue to read religiously-motivated reasons into their actions, even when they explicitly say that they don't like the drone strikes and dead civilians. But.... you say, this is purely religiously-motivated and has nothing to do with civilians... how? You've failed to prove that what they say isn't the truth. Your claims are nothing but pure speculation.

The fact is that there are both religious and politically motivated attacks being cared out by different groups. In some cases these two motivations seem to overlap and at other times the reasons seem to be distinctly one or the other. Either way, I'm sorry, but I don't believe for a second that you've proven your case here.

Arizona Atheist: Regarding Greenwald, to be clear, I am skeptical about his claims about linking Islamofobia to the New Atheism. On the other hand, he is correct about several of the claims made by Harris about the religion are wrong.

I do think he has a point when there are many other acts by religion that should be focused on, which is why I linked to that piece. But I also think the rise in "terrorism" by Muslims the last several years is because of the vast interference and chaos that's been brought to Muslim lands for decades at the hands of the U.S.

What other possible link? Likely the deaths of fellow Muslims. As a people, they feel like there is a war against them so they lash out. It's about social identity. Just as if, let's say, homosexuals were being targeted you had an uptick in violence against heterosexuals by homosexuals as a backlash against the violence. Does this mean that their being homosexual caused that behavior? Of course not. It's the same in this case.

No Cross No Crescent: Fact: Tsarnaev clearly was influenced by an Islamist organization with transnational perspectives (but to say that the Islamist organization was following what the Koran says is "speculation"). Fact: other "identity" groups have never acted this way (eg, homosexuals, whom you specifically named, attacking Iran's interest despite the laughable claim by president Ahmadinejad that they don't even exist in that country, which is not surprising because open homosexuality in Iran is punishable by death). Fact: Islamic language and clear instructions from the Koran, as well as direct quotes from founders of today's biggest Islamist organizations (like the Brotherhood and Jammat-e-Islami) all point to revenge against infidels. But this is all insufficient to show you that Islamism is the problem, not a nebulous "attack on identity". I do not think there is a point in continuing this conversation. It really feels like arguing against creationists.

I have no interest in going over them one by one (and this thread has been quite enough). What's your rationale for thinking this? Even the agents assigned to investigate didn't believe he was responsible for the Fort Hood attack. You continue to blatantly ignore the gross error I pointed out in my post. Al-Awlaki didn't “instigate” anything. He did approve of Hasan's actions, but he did so after the attacks. It's kind of hard to “instigate” something when you only approve of it afterward.

I agree Al-Awlaki's views were becoming highly radical and immoral. However, it's about due process and he did not commit any crimes, let alone deserve the death penalty. And Awlaki certainly never stopped his incitements, he continued to recruit until he died. As for why he deserved the penalty he got, there are precedents for criminal penalties against those who incite violence, if the incitement actually leads to violence. If he received some of his emails he most like got others too. And he certainly gave no indication of disapproval of his murderous intention.

Now, for Awlaki have been a "moderate", I would be extremely cautious. What he said in public in 2002 and before by no means reflects what he preached in his mosque, and less so what he told personal acquaintances like Hasan. Again, if your intention is to commit murder, why bring it up with someone you don't think will be sympathetic?

As for a tribe capturing him, there really isn't a good precedent for that. If anything, precedent suggests locals aren't so reliable as allies when it comes to capturing targets for the US.

As for US "not having evidence" for a trial against Awlaki, if I may remind you, the US is now trying Suleiman Abu Gaith with precisely the same kind of evidence. Awlaki had made tons, and tons, and tons of incitements on you tube (some of which still circulating around the web). And he was linked to several attacks, including the "underwear bombing" and "parcel bombs" of 2010. A jury would convict Awlaki without leaving the jury box. I find the claim that the government killed Awlaki for not having evidence to put him to trial very hard to believe.

(Personally, I find the prospect of boarding a plane with an Awlaki associate on board a lot scarier than Awlaki being put out of business of making propaganda for Al Qaeda by US government). You continue to say the government couldn't convict him. Except the case against Awlaki would have been much stronger than the case against Abu Geith.

I have heard about the book you named and heard about the author. I wasn't overly impressed. I will write a post about the Drone War and how it affects recruitment for Al Qaeda, which is the main point this person brings up. But still that doesn't make the Drone War either morally or legally unacceptable. The fact that I called the Drone War a necessary evil was precisely because of civilian casualties. I never had any sympathy whatsoever for someone like Awlaki.

This is all information I've read about what government agencies were doing and saying at the time. This is no conspiracy theory. Either way, al Awaki could have been captured and even several government agents and members of Congress warned about this dangerous and illegal precedent to kill an American citizen without due process, which is what this is about. I think you should look up what due process is. If you think it's just a “process that you do” (to quote the corrupt A.G. Holder) (like leak unverified accusations against someone to the media) you're horribly mistaken.

My point was that 1) He could have been captured. It happened once, it could happen again. 2) He was in custody for over a year. The U.S. government could have charged him with whatever they claim he had done but they didn't. The Yemeni government saw no evidence against him from the U.S. and let him go. Read that again: The U.S. provided not a shred of evidence of his guilt so they let him go. It's the law that a person is to be freed if there is no evidence against them. That's pretty good evidence that the government had nothing on him that he did anything illegal. That was my point.

Your link discussed a raid by American, British and a mere ten Afghan soldiers. The operation was 99% American and British. I'd hardly call that an example of Afghan forces failing to capture anyone. Besides, I've given several examples of Afghan forces capturing terrorists already, but you seem to continue to ignore all evidence I'm providing. Not very skeptical of you. And that's not ad hominem. That's just the truth. BTW: The raid the article was discussing was from late 2001 or early 2002. I've provided several more recent accounts of Afghan forces capturing suspects. Clearly, they've been more successful. You were citing very outdated information - over ten years ago!

You've utterly failed to provide a shred of evidence that al Awaki did anything that was against the law. You're the one making the claim so the burden of proof is on you and you haven't satisfied that burden. I think this conversion has gone on long enough. I think you're ignoring many facts and your views about simply casting aside all law is horribly short-sighted.

The issue that is greatly frustrating me here is the fact that you – and many other commentators about this case – simply repeat things the U.S. government has said as if it's the gospel truth. “Al-Awlaki was an al Qaeda operative,” “He was plotting to kill Americans,” “He had a hand in the Fort Hood shooting,” and several other justifications. Well, where is the evidence for these actions?

There has not been one shred of evidence proving these claims as I noted in my post. Not by you and not by the government. And the evidence outright refutes your repeated claim about “instigating” the Fort Hood attack. Doesn't this strike you as odd and a bit ominous that the government has simply executed someone without any legit reasons? It is important to separate truth from falsehood in this case. Let's look at several facts.

Yes, Al-Awlaki said some horrible things but they are covered under freedom of speech and it would be hard to prosecute him for this. This is why I believe the government has simply spread this propaganda that even intelligent people like yourself has unfortunately gobbled up without thinking it through. This is what propaganda is. It is a device for shaping public opinion so leaders are free to stretch the bounds of their powers, until they can get away with pretty much whatever they want, which is what's been happening here.

You continue to claim (and I'm paraphrasing here) that anyone who advocates violence ought to simply be shot in the head, but what about their rights to due process? If you don't grant it in one case you can more easily not great it in another case and that is a horrible precedent. I firmly believe that all people should be held accountable for their actions, but that process should include due process.

Now, let's look at G.A. Holder's ludicrous justification for his murder: “He said the government must determine after careful review that the citizen poses an imminent threat of violent attack against the U.S., capture is not feasible and the killing would be consistent with laws of war.”

None of these criteria even applied to him. There has been no evidence that he plotted anything, he was not a member of a terrorist organization, he would have been able to be captured since many people knew where he was, and he was not a “active” combatant in any war. Look up the Geneva conventions. A person who is not in “active hostilities” (meaning active combat) and is not a soldier is classified as a civilian and should be treated under the guidelines of the Geneva Conventions as such, and civilians are to be protected.

Now, obviously, if that civilian engages in hostilities they too can be engaged in combat, but that does not apply in this case. There were no arms being taken up by al-Awlaki. At least there has been no evidence of this. And if the government did have a good case, why not prosecute him in court, present their evidence, and then execute him or place him in prison? There was no reason not to.

As a matter of fact, the Yemeni government did place al-Awlaki in prison at the behest of the U.S. government for about a year, but they finally released him because he was not charged with any crimes and the government presented no evidence. It was after this that the U.S. killed him with a drone. They had him captured but leveled no legal charges against him. I think that ought to raise some red flags don't you think? This is why I recommended you read more about this case.

Holder's case falls apart when you examine the facts, even on the government’s own legally distorted and unprecedented terms. Another site that discusses this issue has a good quote by a prosecutor about the law in this case, along with a video that is nearly identical to our discussion, which I think is a scary proposition. It just shows just how distorted the average public's perception is about this case and
about the body of law surrounding it.

The point is that there was no moral or legal justification for al-Awlaki's murder. Even more than that, this case sets a terrible precedent. I urge you to read this article and think about this. Would you want a republican with these powers? Any concessions by the people about the powers the government can hold applies to other, future, administrations as well. Would you really feel comfortable with another George W. Bush-like president with these powers to simply order people killed?

The facts are that the U.S. government had no legal means by which to act so they simply ignored the law and began spreading unsupported assertions to justify their actions after the fact. This sets a horrible precedent for everyone in the future.

No Cross No Crescent: It is kind of hard to gauge who the people with a "real grudge" against the US would be. Mohammad Atta, for example, was Egyptian. You may say the US supported dictator Mubarak of Egypt. But what about plenty of other dictators the US supported? Franco, Pinochet, Marcus...why didn't any suicide bombers come from their countries? The majority of the 9/11 attackers were Saudis, and the main grievance of the Saudis would the presence of "infidels" in the Islamic holy land-again, a grievance of religious nature.

As for Al Qaeda using the plight of Iraqis to recruit, it has to be said, Al Qaeda has been extremely cynical in exploiting all kinds of situations to recruit. For Al Qaeda to "sympathize" with ordinary Iraqis was the height of hypocrisy. The majority of population in Iraq are Shiites, and Al Qaeda has been murdering them in their thousands for many years now. While the suffering caused by sanctions would not discriminate, numerically most victim would be Shiite. So why would Al Qaeda turn to mass murder the same people it was sympathizing with one day? Easy. Back then it was a tool for recruitment, helping the cause of bringing about a caliphate. Now, the Shiites (considered heretics by fundamentalist Al Qaeda Sunnis) are the main obstacle to a Taliban style "Islamic Emirate" so they have to be killed. It all makes sense if you remember extremist religious ideology is their true motivation.

Arizona Atheist: Muslims are not the only ones who sacrifice themselves. Buddhists have set themselves on fire and killed themselves in protests against the Chinese. Killing oneself in protest is not purely an Islamic issue. However, as I said before, I do agree that religion is an aspect of Muslims' hatred against the U.S., particularly regarding their occupation of “holy” lands. But you're also missing another aspect of why groups like al Qaeda attack the U.S. As I've pointed out many times, with several clear cut examples, it is often the killing of innocents that cause them to become angry. And it's the destruction of their communities. You argue it's mere propaganda, but you've failed to show any evidence that your view is the only correct one. You simply assert that what they say can't be true. Where's your evidence? I've provided several examples of bombers citing drone attacks for their reason for their own attacks.

And you didn't answer my question from before. If their religion is central to their attacks, and not retaliation over the destruction of their lands and the killing of masses of the population, why don't they consistently call on other Muslims to attack the US over civilian deaths and not only about the presence of “infidels” on “holy” places? Surely, the latter would gain more support since, as you argue, most al Qaeda figures don't care if most the population dies? It's highly unlikely these calls for justice over dead civilians is only propaganda.

No Cross No Crescent: Well I did mention that they use as a rallying cry in solidarity with people they actually consider heretics and will kill if they get a chance (Iraqi Shiites). If that doesn't show their claims are cynical I don't know what will. And why won't they be more honest in their propaganda for recruitment? Because there are over a billion Muslims in the world and not many of them are as obsssed with setting up Islamic Emirates as Al Qaeda is. Of course once recruited they will be indictrinated, but it is easier to rope them in using the plight of their brethren and then turn their rage against generic infidels having nothing to to do with the said plight, eg, the Tsarnaevs.

No Cross No Crescent: There is a lot of anti-US resentment in Latin America, and not a single suicide attack. Reason? Religion. Anti-US resentment exists in many parts of the world, some of it legitimate and some not. But it doesn't show itself in this particular way. And in case anyone forgot, 9/11 happened before there were any drone strikes.

Of course any group of people could react violently to what they perceive as an attack on their country, but it is not so common for them to react in such a way to an attack on ANOTHER country. I asked for terrorism arising from the nebulous concept of an attack on a group's "identity" (your example being hypothetical violence from gay people, as a result of attacks on other gays). Since there is absolutely no example of this, the hypothesis that Islamists actions are primarily motivated by ideology ("we are all members of the Ummah", spelled out by the Islamists themselves very often) remains unchallenged.

You were asking for examples of other groups attacking the U.S. and I gave you an example. This isn't about “identity.” You had asked for evidence of other groups attacking the U.S. I believe you've committed a fallacy, commonly called the act of “moving the goal post.” You asked for evidence of groups other than Muslims who've attacked the U.S., I provided it, and you ignored said evidence by claiming it's not good enough because they didn't come to the U.S. to commit their attack (“Of course any group of people could react violently to what they perceive as an attack on their country, but it is not so common for them to react in such a way to an attack on ANOTHER country.”) Ummm.... they tried to assassinate the U.S. president when he visited their country. Attacks do not have to take place on U.S. soil for them to count. That's why U.S. citizens are often targeted in foreign countries, such as a night club a few years ago that was blown up. Forgive me, I can't recall where off the top of my head (Brazil maybe?). There were Americans vacationing there, who the Muslims suicide bombers wanted to target.

I'm sorry, but the facts are clear. Groups have attacked the U.S. solely because of their foreign policy. I am of course not denying religion plays it's role in some cases, as I've said before, but in many cases foreign policy is the sole motivating factor.

No Cross No Crescent: You don't see French homosexuals attacking Iranian interests because Iran persecutes Iranian homosexuals. You don't see people from Honduras attacking the US because the US has imposed sanctions against Cuba. Forgive me but your hypothesis that people attack the perpetrator for grievances against their "identity" just doesn't pan out. People from religions/sexual orientations/ethnicities etc harboring NO GRIEVANCES against a certain nation do not attack that nation BECAUSE OTHERS HAVE BEEN ATTACKED BY THAT NATION. The kind of revenge that comes from Islamists (like Tsarnaev going after the US for things happening in Afghanistan, without the US ever having been engaged in a war in Chechnya where he is from) are UNIQUE. You said that is because his "identity" has been attacked. I showed you that aside from Islamists this just doesn't happen. Now who is moving the goal post?The facts are clear. You are trying to put the give religious ideology a clean bill of health so you can put the blame on US policy.

Once again, you commit the fallacy known as “moving the goal post.” You ask for examples of people from other countries, like Latin America and now Cuba, who have attacked the U.S. You continue asking for more examples and I keep fulfilling your demand, and when I do, you continue to want more examples. I think it's pretty clear that no amount of evidence will be sufficient to prove to you that U.S. foreign policy is largely to blame for the many attacks the U.S. and it's citizens suffers, both at home and abroad.

By the way, I only used the subject of homosexuality as an example to demonstrate my point. I wasn't trying to infer that homosexuality causes violence or something of that nature so your argument on that issue is moot.

You ask for terrorists from Cuba, now, eh? I am not aware of any acts of “terrorism” from any Cubans. To this I say, so what? This does not mean that it can't or won't happen some time in the future. The 9/11 attacks took place to avenge acts that happened in the mid 90's so who is to say that U.S. actions in Cuba might create some hostile acts against the U.S. in the future? This does nothing to the fact, however, that peoples from countries other than Muslim ones have attacked the U.S. or its citizens, or leaders in some way as retribution. This fact cannot be denied. Somehow, though, you are denying these facts and I'm honestly stumped as to the best way to get these facts to resonate inside your head. Up to this point I've been unsuccessful.

Update (June 13, 2015): I have been doing some reading at the Global Terrorism Database, looking at the many instances of terrorism in the US. At the time I was unaware of this resource, but I have come across something interesting. NCNC was asking for Cuban terrorists. Well, the database lists 20 acts of terrorism in the mid-70's by the group calling itself National Front for the Liberation of Cuba. In addition, the Organization Alliance of Cuban Intransigence also committed one attack, using an Improvised Explosive Device to try to kill Maria Christina Herrera in 1988. Other Cuban groups are also listed. I wish I had known about this resource before. But it just goes to show the lack of skepticism and diligent thinking and research that goes into NCNC's worldview.

As far as the Tsarnaev issue specifically, I've since come across information that he may have committed his actions because of his religious identity, but I've yet to get any confirmation of this. Until I do, I can only go by what he said about being motivated by U.S. actions. Even if he did carry out his attacks due to religious ideology, this would do nothing to my case since there are many examples I could cite where people attacked the U.S. Specifically because of U.S. actions inside their country. Muslims are one example, though I agree that religion is an aspect of these actions,but it is by no means the only reason by far. I demonstrated also how a group from Latin America tried to assassinate the then President of the United States because of the U.S. actions in Latin America. I've also cited a number of direct quotes of "terrorists" claiming U.S. actions as a reason for their attacks, from bin Laden to the "underwear bomber." These are the facts. I've said all I can. Foreign policy is often a reason many groups harbor grievances against the U.S. and oftentimes these grievances lead to violent acts. And yes, religion certainly has it's role, but it's certainly not the sole factor in many cases.

This concludes the discussion. It took place over the course of a month or two, which is why it is so long. I think it should be clear who won this debate. I had all the facts on my side, while NCNC continually cited opinion, speculation, and relied more on fallacious reasoning than logical argumentation. I think it should be obvious to anyone that any time someone must resort to faulty reasoning to support their views, those views are very much in error, and I believe it is intellectually dishonest to hold positions that defy the facts, except that's precisely what NCNC has chosen to do.

My Thoughts About a Drone Debate


On February 27, 2013 a debate took place titled America's Drone Campaign is Both Moral and Effective. Arguing the affirmative case were David Aaronovitch and Douglas Murray. Arguing against the premise were Professor Noel Sharkey and Clive Stafford-Smith.

The panel of experts (I dispute calling some of these individuals “experts”) who joined the debate through the platform Google+ were Professor Michael Boyle, the counter-terrorism adviser on the Obama 2008 presidential campaign and assistant professor of political science at La Salle University, Philadelphia; Professor Christine Fair, Assistant professor in the Center for Peace and Security Studies (CPASS), Georgetown University; Ibrahim Mothana, a 24-year-old writer, activist and a co-founder of Yemen's Watan Party; and Dr Mohammad Taqi, a Physician and columnist at the Daily Times, Pakistan.

Here is the video of the debate. My comments will begin below it.



My general thoughts about this debate overall is that in the beginning I felt that the group who advocated for the use of drones made a strong impression, more so than the opposition. I felt that the pro-drone side made their case in a very well-presented manner and were much better organized than their opponents. However, as the debate wore on, those advocating the drone war began to hurl insults and made claims that, when I looked into them, were flat out wrong.

After doing my own research into the drones and laying out my own case against their use I can safely say that about 98% of all of the arguments the pro-drone side presented I have addressed (and refuted) in my extensive post on the subject. The focus on this post will be to tackle a few claims that I found false or misleading by some of the pro-drone debaters.

Some of the arguments that Christine Fair made in particular stick out in my mind. At the beginning of the debate she seemed like a fairly impartial observer, but as the debate wore on, she greatly wore on my patience with her constant snipes at the anti-drone side and I found that several of her claims were outright false. For example, she claimed late in the debate that there were no drone strikes in South Waziristan, Pakistan. I looked up this assertion and it is completely false. I found several examples of drone strikes in South Waziristan in 2011, two years before this debate even took place. Other strikes also occurred in 2012, as reported by the BBC. I also found other occurrences a few weeks prior to this debate!

Another one of her claims was that the majority of Pakistanis are advocates of the drones and welcome them. I believe a June 2012 Pew Research study is very telling. It reports that “[r]oughly three-in-four Pakistanis (74%) consider the U.S. an enemy, up from 69% last year and 64% three years ago.” The report also found that “roughly four-in-ten believe that American economic and military aid is actually having a negative impact on their country, while only about one-in-ten think the impact is positive.” Another study, this one done in 2010 by The New America Foundation, questioned 1,000 individuals in the FATA region. One of the main findings was that “[m]ore than three-quarters of FATA residents oppose American drone strikes. Indeed, only 16 percent think these strikes accurately target militants; 48 percent think they largely kill civilians and another 33 percent feel they kill both civilians and militants.” It further found that “[f]or many FATA residents, opposition to the U.S. is based on current American military policy, not any intractably held anti-American beliefs.” It does not appear that Christine Fair's claim about the majority of Pakistanis approving of the drone strikes stands up to the facts.

Another argument made by Christine Fair and other drone advocates is that drones are correlated with a decrease in violence. After doing some searching there is an oft-cited study by Patrick B. Johnston and Anoop K. Sarbahi titled The Impact of U.S. Drone Strikes on Terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I believe that the authors resort to a strawman at the outset when they write,

Some theories suggest that drone strikes anger Muslim populations, and that consequent blowback incites Islamist terrorism. […] We use detailed data on U.S. drone strikes and terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan from 2004-2011 to test each theory's implications. We find that drone strikes are associated with decreases in the incidence and lethality of terrorist attacks, as well as decreases in particularly intimidating and deadly terrorist tactics, including suicide and IED attacks. These results lend credence to the argument that drone strikes, while unpopular, have bolstered U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Pakistan - and cast doubt on claims that drone strikes are militarily ineffective. (Abstract)

Opponents of the drone war often cite anti-American feelings and attacks upon American citizens abroad or against the U.S. itself. These feelings are most often the result of drone attacks (among other imperialistic, immoral, illegal and careless actions) that kill innocents. This objection isn't referring to what happens only in Pakistan or Afghanistan, but resulting violence that also occurs around the world. I cited several examples of these reprisal attacks in my extensive post about why I do not support the drone wars. The authors lay out their argument:

A systematic analysis of the data reveals that drone strikes have succeeded in curbing deadly terrorist attacks in Pakistan. Specifically, the key findings of our study show that drone strikes are associated with substantial reductions in terrorist violence along four key dimensions. First, drone strikes are generally associated with a reduction in the rate of terrorist attacks. Second, drone strikes are also associated with a reduction in the number of people killed as a result of terrorist attacks. Third, drone strikes tend to be linked to decreases in the use of particularly lethal and intimidating tactics, including suicide and IED attacks. Fourth, the study finds that this reduction in terrorism is not the result of militants leaving unsafe areas and conducting attacks elsewhere in the region; on the contrary, there is some evidence to suggest that drone strikes have a small violence-reducing effect in areas near those struck by drones. Taken together, these findings strongly suggest that despite drone strikes’ unpopularity, official claims that drones have aided U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Pakistan appear to be credible and should not be dismissed out of hand. (3)

After reading their report, despite its very limited scope, it appears that drones do have some minimal affect on the amount of violence in the areas where drone strikes occur. On page 3 the authors admit this when they write that “drone strikes have a small violence-reducing effect in areas near those struck by drones.” This conclusion is backed by other studies as well. A 2011 study titled Are Drone Strikes Effective in Afghanistan and Pakistan? On the Dynamics of Violence between the United States and the Taliban, by David A. Jaeger and Zahra Siddique came to roughly the same conclusion, but their conclusions were not nearly as supportive of the drone program as the other researchers. They wrote,

We find that there is little significant impact of drone strikes on Taliban attacks in Afghanistan but that there is a significant impact of drone strikes on Taliban attacks in Pakistan. This impact varies from a positive vengeance effect in the first week following a drone strike to a negative deterrent/incapacitation effect in the second week following a drone strike, when we examine the incidence of terrorist attacks by the Taliban. The impact is negative in both the first and second week following a drone strike, when we examine the number of terrorist attacks by the Taliban. (13)

This study's findings demonstrate that the drone strikes do not always have an effect upon “militant” violence. In some regions, such as Afghanistan, there is none. The study also found “some vengeance effects of drone strikes on violence by the Haqqani faction but also deterrent/incapacitation effects of drone strikes on violence by both the Haqqani and Mehsud factions of the Taliban.” (13) When looking at the conclusions of these studies together, there does appear to be a small reduction in violence. This study also confirmed the existence of “vengeance” attacks as critics have alleged. However, it does not appear that drone strikes are the highly effective counter-terrorism tool as drone advocates argue.

I do not believe a “small” gain in the reduction of violence is proportional to the large amount of ill will that has developed against the U.S. due to drone strikes killing innocents, not to mention the unfortunate loss of life of those same innocents. Furthermore, proponents of the drone attacks who use this small advantage to argue that drone attacks are effective ignore what I said in an earlier post about the role of tactics and counter-tactics in combat.

Another argument put forward by Christine Fair was that the study Living Under Drones suffered from horrible methodology and was biased towards the critics of the drone war. She accused the University that conducted the study, NYU, as providing misleading results because Reprieve, the organization that approached NYU about conducting the study, is against the use of drones.

I disagree with this conclusion. While I do acknowledge that many of the interviews with drone victims were set up by Reprieve and could have possibly created a slight selection bias, it does appear that NYU's conclusions are consistent with other studies I mentioned earlier that demonstrate a high level of dislike for drones, and the findings in this study are a likely reason for that dislike. I do believe the study's conclusions are overly reliable. In addition, something Fair left out was that the study stated explicitly that their goal was to “undertake independent fact-finding and analysis” about the effects drones have upon the civilian population, among other moral and legal questions surrounding the drone wars. Unlike what Ms. Fair lead viewers to believe, Reprieve did not influence the study's conclusions. They go on to write how “[t]he Stanford and NYU Clinics designed the research project, analyzed information, and drafted and edited the report independently from Reprieve and FFR.” Finally, Christine Fair provided no evidence that any of the study’s conclusions or facts were incorrect.

Fair made an odd allegation about the lack of medical expertise brought in to verify that pictures of dead children actually died from drone strikes and not from terrorist-related violence. Fair claims that many Pakistanis have lied about how their children died, but provided no evidence of this. The Living Under Drones study does not say explicitly that doctors examined photos, but in the section on methodology they do cite getting the opinions of medical professionals and verifying their facts through multiple, independent sources. They write, “The research team has made extensive efforts to check information provided by interviewees against that provided in other interviews, known general background information, other reports and investigations, media reports, and physical evidence wherever possible. Many of the interviewees provided victims’ identification cards and some shared photographs of victims and strike sites, or medical records documenting their injuries. We also reviewed pieces of missile shrapnel.” (5)

Another “expert” consulted during the debate was Dr Mohammad Taqi. I did not care for him either. His argument was mostly made up of appeals to emotion, justifying his support for drones by recounting the friends he has lost because of extremist violence, citing very little – if any – evidence. I feel sorrow for his losses, but I'd like to ask him if he believes it's worth destroying many innocent lives just to kill a few terrorists? Wouldn't a method that was less risky be much better?

Near the end of the debate Clive Stafford-Smith asked David Aaronovitch if we should treat the drug war like the war against terrorism and ignore the rule of law and go into Columbia and kill leaders of drug cartels with drones. Aaronovitch responded by stating yes, if the democratically-elected government gave the U.S. permission to conduct drone strikes. I found this response astounding because it's incredibly hypocritical. Earlier Aaronovitch had argued that this isn't a war against states, but with specific groups that reside within certain states, which requires different tactics (violating the sovereignty of other nations for instance). Why the discrepancy? It's OK in his mind to violate international law when it comes to the “war on terror” but the “war on drugs” requires the U.S. to gain permission to enter another state's territory? This makes no sense.

During the audience Q&A Aaronovitch was discussing the legality of U.S. actions, mentioning the war in Iraq, Kosovo, and I'm assuming drone strikes as well, and he seemed to argue that, if these actions were truly illegal, why hasn't the U.S. been brought to the International Criminal Court to face up to their crimes? This argument is completely absurd. The reasons ought to be clear. The U.S. simply refuses to own up to its crimes and refuses to hold those accountable who were responsible for those crimes. It happened when in 1986 the World Court condemned the United States for its actions in Nicaragua regarding the Iran-Contra affair and declared the United States' actions “unlawful” because of its “use of force.” The World Court then passed a resolution arguing that the U.S. was “in breach of its obligation under customary international law not to use force against another state" and ordered it to pay reparations. Another example is when President Obama refused to prosecute George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for war crimes as well as the banks which created the financial meltdown. There are many other examples, but I think my point has been made.

During the audience Q&A I was appalled by Christine Fair's attitude when an audience member addressed her as “the lady on the screen” and she responded by very rudely saying, “First of all, 'the lady' is Dr. Fair and you can save that sexist crap for someone else.” She goes on to ignore the young man's question, which was a very good point about the U.S. government being very tight-lipped about the drone program and how this seems to count against the pro-drone side that there isn't enough precise information about the drone program to make the claims about drone deaths that critics often make, because even drone supporters don't all of the facts either. Fair further says how she does conduct research and continues to criticize the report Living Under Drones as being an example of poor research, again without really providing any evidence. And given the few errors I've pointed out, I think her “research” should be tightly scrutinized because she apparently can't get her facts straight even on the little issues she brought up. A minute prior to this exchange Fair wrote on a white board, “Clive is Wrong,” and held it up to her screen, another display of unprofessional behavior by this “Professor.” Given her immature demeanor throughout the debate I can't blame the audience member for forgetting her name. She was rude, unprofessional, and most importantly, wrong.

These were my thoughts and the results of my findings when I looked into many of the claims by the drone advocates. I do not believe the opposition made their case: most of their facts were wrong, their arguments have been thoroughly refuted in another post I've written, and their behavior during the debate could have been more professional.
